German Script Font

Script fonts are created based on the varied and fluid stroke in handwriting. Generally, there are two styles of script writing. One is formal script writing, which is very similar to cursive writing. This kind of script writing mimics the letter forms of 17th and 18th century writing masters and the letters look like as if they were generated by a quill or metal nib of a pen. Script fonts of this kind are usually used in fancy invitations, greeting cards, certificates, wedding preparations. Another type is casual script writing, which tends to be less formal and looser and has wider strokes. Casual script writing can be seen in advertising, entertainment. For example, the logo of famous TV series American Idol uses a modified typeface called Kaufman as their logo, which is a script font of casual style. The popular Australian soap opera Neighbours once used a script font called Brush Script in its opening title designs.

Feel Script designed by Alejandro Paul is a typical font family in cursive script writing. According to the designer, the font is based on the lettering that calligrapher and logo designer Rand Holub created for Intertype for his face Monterey. Feel Script contains more than 1200 glyphs including stylistic alternates, contextual alternates, titling alternates, swashes, and ligatures.

This old-fashioned script, known as Kurrentschrift, was taught in German schools until 1941, when the government declared that a Latin-based font (the script we use) was to be the new form of writing in the country. The Kurrent script, which is commonly known as 'The Old German Script' evolved from the gothic cursive handwriting at the beginning of the 16th century. The gothic cursive had been in use throughout much of the medieval ages and had developed into a staggering number of different writing styles.

When I was young there was an old German poster in my family kitchen that used to drive me insane, because although I knew it was in German, I couldn't read what was written on it. It looked to me like another language! 'It's because that is old German handwriting', my mum told me. 'Some of the letters look very different.' Today I'd like to show you what old German handwriting looks like, should you ever be faced with the same, confusing situation!

A little history first!

Old German Handschrift (handwriting), known as die Kurrentschrift or Kurrent for short in German, but also known simply as die alte deutsche Schrift (‘Old German script'), was closely modelled on the handwriting used in das Mittelalter (medieval times).

An updated version of Kurrent called Sütterlin was developed in the early 20th Century, and was used and taught in German schools until the government changed it to deutsche Normalschrift (‘normal German script'). This updated handwriting resembled das lateinisches Alphabet (Latin alphabet) more closely, and is the German handwriting that is still used and taught today.

Significant differences between old and new German handwriting

A point of confusion with old German handwriting is that some of its letters don't look like their modern counterparts. The characters for c, e, n, m, and u, for example, all look very similar, while the h looks more like an f. If you are interested in learning what the old letters look like, study this photo of Kurrentschrift to familiarise yourself with them:

Unlike old German, modern German handwriting is fairly easy to read and follow. Be sure to look out for the number 1, which can resemble a 7 at times. This is especially important when it comes to addressing letters and giving card details, for example!

Here is a card sent to me by my German aunt, so you can see what modern German handwriting looks like ‘in action'!
